Next Tuesday, January 14, I will be halfway through my stint at my 2nd job. I work part time at Walmart. It is dreadful. I make barely anything worth mentioning. What I make in 4 hours there is about what I make in an hour at my day job.
I hate not having much free time any longer. I hate not having a weekend off to get stuff done, or to just sit and watch crappy movies with my family every once in awhile.
Half way there though. Half way done.

Just out of curiosity, why exactly does one need the second job?
Is there perhaps a way to reduce spending to eliminate the need for two paychecks?
Don't need specifics, and not trying to be an ass. Just honestly curious.

Jon Stewart once said, "Walmart pays its employees just enough so they can afford to shop...at Walmart." They might as well pay you in company scrip. Hang in there.

No worries, I get that question a lot.
We are basically going on two big vacations this year. So in order to do that, and not drain savings, I offered to work 2 jobs for a bit. I have a set time span that I need to work to make what we need. I did it back in 2011 as well. The walmart I work at is about 3 minutes from my house, so that is a plus.
Also, if I get pissed off enough, I can just walk. I know I'm not tied to that job. That helps a little.
We like to travel. And I also plan on retiring in about 20 years. So to keep all of that in my life, I decided to just work two jobs. I try not to complain about it, especially since it was my idea. But lately, it has really been draining on me.

Well, one could argue that perhaps you could cut back on traveling.
That said, I can't say I wouldn't do the same.

What a great voice. According to my father, his uncle and his uncle's dad were heavily into the PA coal mining business and paid their workers with scrip that was only good at the company store. They got into big trouble for it, but what better way to keep all the money in the company?

Yup, that is pretty much why Walmart gives its employees a discount card. You can use it from fresh items and general merchandise. You save 10% or something like that. It makes the employees feel like they are getting something, and it basically gives the company their money back.

Just want to say I think that's pretty cool. Yes, you're missing out on quality time at home, but in exchange you're getting what are sure to be some memorable experiences. I mean, between your vacations and however much time you could have spent watching TV at home, which are you going to remember in 20 years? I actually have put off some travel I was hoping to do this year because of low funds, and the idea of working part time to finance a trip had not even occurred to me. I will have to consider this....
Where are you planning on vacationing? I could use some vicarious pleasure!

One trip is Disney with our kids. Then later this year my wife and I are going out to Seattle to hang out with my buddy and his wife and kids.

Very cool! I hope you guys get a chance to go out to the San Juan islands while you're in Seattle — that was by far my favorite part of that area when I lived there. Disney I do not envy, but I'm sure your kids will have a blast!

We will probably just hang out when we get out to Seattle. But a trip around the Olympic peninsula did get mentioned. San Juan Islands will probably happen sooner or later though. I imagine we will be going out that way quite a bit.
Disney...well it's Disney. We have been there with our girls about 3 or 4 other times. Still fun to go, but we are winding down our visits there. Time to start going to other places with the kids soon.
